Goal setting frustrations? It does not have to be this way.

By John

“To get to where you want to be, you have to know where you are.”

John.

There is nothing wrong with setting SMART goals; they’re great. Especially if you already know what you want to achieve and by when. Many people enjoy a lot of success with them. But what if they’re not for you?

What if, despite everyone else’s monumental success, you struggle with them? You could experiment with a different goal-setting formula and see how that goes. Maybe you’ll get lucky; maybe you won’t. More than likely, you’ll end up back at square one, having wasted precious time, thinking that it’s better to “just wing it” and see what happens.

What if there is another way?

To begin with, SMART goals, or any goal-setting formula, assumes that you know what you want, when you want it, and some basic idea of how to get it. The SMART formula is like “fill in the blanks” of the goal setting world.

What if you’re not there yet? What if you’re at a place even before this point? The point where you know that something is not right, or something needs replacing, or something needs improving, but you haven’t worked it through.

If you find yourself unsure of the direction to take, uncertainty can make traditional goal-setting feel overwhelming or even impossible. It’s at this stage—before you’ve clearly identified your goals—that a different approach is needed.

I used to be just like you. I started out setting smart goals in the traditional way.

  • S – blah.
  • M – blah blah.
  • A – blah.
  • R – blah, blah, blah.
  • T – blah.

It seemed clinical. I was just going through the motions. I wanted to set goals that meant something, that made a difference, that I could achieve. I wanted to set a goal that meant so much that not achieving it was unthinkable.

It wasn’t just in my personal life, either. My boss encouraged it. My appraisal depended upon it. You would have thought that the promise of a promotion, of more money, would have spurred me on. Nope.

Success kept eluding me. Achievable goals were always just out of reach, because the more I tried, the more distracted I got and quit. Introducing
